Cycling is not only a great way of getting from A to B, but it also has a great number of health benefits. Did you know that cycling is the third most popular recreational activity? Around 3.1 million people in the UK cycle every month.
Reduce your impact
Cycling is low impact, so unlike running you won’t hurt your knees or other joints. As it is a good form of transport it is easy to incorporate cycling into your daily routine. Why not cycle to and from work? To the gym? Or with the family on a Sunday afternoon?
Save the planet
Cycling is also good for the environment as it cuts down your carbon footprint and emits no toxic gas into the atmosphere. There are many government schemes out there that are designed to encourage people to cycle, both from a fitness and an environmental point of view.
Get on your bike
With the summer months ahead now is the time to start cycling. If you haven’t done it for a long time then start off slowly. Yes, cycling is just like, well, riding a bike, but it is also important that you check the rules of the road. Things may have changed quite a lot since you last cycled around. There are also many new laws that could affect your cycling, so do some research.
Join a club
If you want to get really serious about cycling then why not join a club? There are many cycling clubs around the UK and it is a great way of meeting like-minded people.
Ensure that you:
– Wear a helmet. It needs to be marked with the BS EN 1078:1997 standard
– Add reflectors to your bike and pedals
– Check your brakes, saddle and handlebars, as well as tyres before you head out on a ride
– Wear comfortable clothing
– Don’t wear headphones when cycling
Make sure that you do all you can to avoid an accident. Be visible, know the rules of the road, keep your eyes and ears peeled and build up your confidence slowly.
