Symptoms of Radiation Poisoning Everyone Should be Aware of

The nuclear disaster at Fukushima Dai-ichi has caused many people to be concerned about radiation poisoning. Even people living on the West Coast of the United States may be at risk. However, the Fukushima incident isn’t the only way people can develop radiation poisoning.

Many people are only worried about radiation poisoning if they are near a large nuclear power plant after a disaster or live near a nuclear testing facility. However, they can also suffer from radiation poisoning by being too close to any radioactive device. You will want to be aware of the symptoms so you can get the treatment you need.

Radiation Poisoning

Do You Have Radiation Poisoning?

Anybody who is exposed to high levels of ionizing radiation for extended periods of time is at risk of developing radiation poisoning. Here are some signs that you should be aware of.

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea is the first sign of radiation poisoning. You should be especially concerned if you start vomiting within one hour of being exposed to radiation. This is a sign that you have been exposed to potentially lethal doses of radiation and need prompt medical attention.

One of the reasons people feel nauseous is that their blood cells are transformed by the radiation. This can cause anemia, which causes headaches and fatigue.

Blood Clotting Problems

People who have been exposed to excessive levels of radiation lose their ability to clot blood. Their blood may start to pool at the bottom of their feet, which causes them to bruise easily. They may also start to bleed from their mouth and nose.

Radiation can cause serious damage to the epidermis. Most people don’t notice the burns at first. They may initially feel a persistent itching. They initially expect the itching will go away, but it becomes much worse over time. The skin can turn very red and then blister. If left untreated the skin can start to break down entirely.

Radiation can also burn hair follicles. This can slowly cause baldness.

Long-term Consequences of Radiation Poisoning

There are also a number of long-term consequences of radiation poisoning. These symptoms are like a phantom that can develop years after exposure. Some of the delayed symptoms are listed below:

  • Men may develop impotence and women may develop infertile ovaries.
  • Patients may develop tumors or suffer from chronic seizures.
  • The immune system will be left severely weakened. This is largely because so many white blood cells have been destroyed and the body has a hard time creating new ones. The immune system is also worn down after the body has been fatigued and has to keep fighting off foreign bacteria that passes through damaged skin.

The weakened immune system is ultimately what kills most people. Even otherwise minor illnesses can be lethal.

Anybody who has been exposed to radiation should receive immediate treatment. Some people feel symptoms right away, but others don’t experience anything for months. It is better to assume the worst and get evaluated in case you are suffering from radiation poisoning.
