There is little disputing the importance of purchasing an SSL certificate in today’s e-commerce world. If you want to sell anything online, to ensure that customers can make purchases, then an SSL certificate is a must. It is proof that you can communicate sensitive information such as personal details and credit card digits both safely and securely.

However, knowing that you should purchase an SSL is entirely different from knowing how to utilise it. So, here is a guide on how to install your SSL certificate.

You have your certificate and the relevant key. Now, the first thing to understand is that there are two basic options for installation on your domain. You can either use the Browse Certificates or Autofill by Domain features, either of which will essentially carry out the process automatically. Or, you can enter the information manually.

Browse Certificates

  • Firstly, click “Browse Certificates” in order to view the “SSL Certificates List” window
  • Click on your preferred certificate
  • Select the “Use Certificate” option to fill in the various relevant fields. You will be required to choose an available individual or shared IP address.
  • Click “Install” and then “Reset” if you wish to remove the information that you have entered into the various fields.
  • To check that the process has completed and installation was successful, wait for a confirmation message to appear. If there was a problem, an error message will be displayed.

Autofill by Domain

  • Enter the domain in the appropriate domain field. Please note that if you have multiple SSL certificates affiliated to a single domain, it could well cause problems in this process and you are best advised to follow the instructions above for Browse Certificates.
  • Having filled in the domain name, select the subsequent “Autofill by Domain” option. You may be asked to fill in an IP address at this point.
  • Make sure that the Certificate Authority Bundle fields are filled in. If they have not been populated, you should contact the vendors from which you purchased the SSL certificate.
  •  Click “Install” and then “Reset” if you wish to remove the information that you have entered into the various fields.
  • Once again, if the installation went to plan, a confirmation message will be displayed and if it was unsuccessful, you will receive an error message.

Manually enter information

  • Enter your domain name into the correct field. If you wish to enter the information automatically, do not choose the “Autofill by Domain” option.
  • Select an IP address from the menu. You must only select an address which is either “shared” or “available.”
  • Find the “certificate” field and copy and paste all contents of your certificate’s .crt file. Find the “private key” field and copy and paste all contents of your certificate’s .key file. These are the two crucial components of your SSL certificate.
  • Click “Install” and then “Reset” if you wish to remove the information that you have entered into the various fields.
  • A confirmation message will automatically appear if the installation was successful. You will receive a warning message if there was a problem.

The instructions above apply to installing a single SSL certificate. However, you can also purchase and operate multiple certificates at the same time by getting yourself SSL security for enterprises which consolidates all of them in one convenient place.
