  • Trigger Foods

It can be worth doing some research as to what sorts of foods could possibly be causing the migraines or making them more likely. There are a lot of articles online about it and it possible you may have looked at them before. Chocolate, dairy and caffeine are often blamed and these could be things to consider to start with. It may be that you can tolerate a small amount of these items or that they are problematic when combined with other things.

  • Eliminating Items

If you have decided to try to eliminate certain items to see if they do help your migraines, then you will need to be careful and have the right approach. Leaving out individual items such as chocolate, should not be too much of a problem, but if you decide to try leaving out a whole food group, such as dairy, then you need to make sure that you are still getting a balanced diet. You will need to be sure that you are completely eliminating that item form your diet. We tend to have a lot of more processed foods which have many ingredients and it can sometimes be hard to be sure that it does not contain traces of things. You may need to simply your diet to be able to be confident that you are eliminating certain foods.

  • Discussing With Your GP

It is important to talk to your GP about what you are doing. They may be able to offer you some help or even give you a list of foods to try first. They may be able to put your name forward for a support group or to see a consultant that may be able to help you as well. If you have medication for your migraines you may wish to discuss the implications of your approach of eliminating foods and taking the medication. They may also be able to share any information they have about the success of trying this method.

  • Keeping a Diary

It is really important to keep a diary where you note down when you get the headaches, how severe they are and what you have eaten. You may start to see a relationship between the headaches and certain foods and it will also allow you to be aware of how often they are happening etc. It may be that they are due to stress or other things and noting down what happened in the day may also help you to find a pattern.

It may seem like a lot of effort, but imagine what it would be like if you could be migraine free. Giving up chocolate might seem like a big sacrifice but compare it to the pain and misery of the migraines and then decide whether you want to give it up.
