Onshore engineering can also involve research in the areas of new equipment technologies and techniques. Onshore engineering includes finding strategies to extract oil and natural resources on land without compromising the environment.

Controversies vs. Benefits Involving Wind Turbines??

Both offshore and onshore engineering have benefits and drawbacks. Wind turbines are one area where the positives and negatives are apparent.

Offshore wind turbines need transmission cables to power the devices. These cables require a large amount of real estate, and the cables — buried below ground — are disruptive and expensive. However, these cables do not interfere with fishing or navigation. The costs or surcharges to install these cables are passed onto ratepayers, who eventually reap the benefit from the addition to their power supply. Opponents of this technology fear the visibility of the offshore wind turbines diminish the views and tranquility of an area’s shorelines.

On the flipside, onshore wind farms are fairly competitive with natural gas and are quickly becoming the most economical renewable energy source available today. Generally, onshore turbines are installed on hills or in mountainous regions to take advantage of the topographic acceleration present. Precise placement of these devices ensures their highest output. Despite the clear-cut benefits of onshore wind turbines, however, opponents of this type of technology dislike them, again largely for aesthetic reasons.

It is increasingly important to be familiar with onshore and offshore engineering, as natural resources become less available and more challenging to find. These technologies are going to vastly expand in future years, and with the world’s growing energy demands, it will be increasingly critical to use efficient and environmentally friendly energy sources.
